About this study
This study employs a design-based research approach with the goal of improving the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) in classroom teaching.
Our focus is on the application of AR in Science and Chinese Language learning, and we have worked together with Science and Chinese teachers from various Primary Schools in Singapore to develop lesson resources together. We aim to provide not just technological support, but also contribute to the theoretical and pedagogical understanding of how AR can be effectively implemented in classrooms.

About our team
Principal Investigator: Asst. Prof. Wen Yun
Dr Wen Yun is an Assistant Professor in the Learning Sciences and Assessment Academic Group. Prior to this, she worked as a Lecturer at the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL), providing in-service training for school teachers. She obtained her PhD from the National Institute of Education, Singapore, and completed her Postdoc at the Computer-Human Interaction in Learning and Instruction (CHILI) Lab in EPFL, Switzerland.
She works on emerging technology-enabled pedagogical innovation. Her research investigates how people learn through interaction and conversations in multimodal environments, and how to use emerging technologies, such as Augmented Reality (AR) or Artificial Intelligence (AI), to spark productive interactions and enhance learning.
She leads interdisciplinary teams of researchers, developers, and educational practitioners, to make a profound impact on teaching and learning practice and shed light on theoretical perspectives on integrating emerging technologies into learning. She serves as Associate Editor of Educational Technology & Society (ET&S) and Asia Pacific Journal of Education (APJE).
Dr Wen is the first faculty from NIE to be awarded the prestigious Social Science and Humanities Research Fellowship by the Singapore Social Science Research Council. She is also a recipient of the Nanyang Research Award (Young Investigator) 2021.
Guo Xinyu
Ms. Guo Xinyu is a research assistant in the Learning Sciences and Assessment Academic Group. She is also a PhD student with research interests in AI-enhanced language learning and computer-supported collaborative learning. Before joining NIE, she worked as a research associate at the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL). Ms. Guo has four years of experience teaching Chinese language to both K-12 students and adults in Singapore.
He Sujin
Ms. He Sujin is a Research Assistant at the National Institute of Education (NIE). Prior to joining NIE, she was involved in curatorial research for arts and heritage organisations. Her research portfolio includes projects focused on school autonomy and leadership, informal learning spaces, and making-centred learning. She enjoys being in nature, observing wildlife, and has a deep appreciation for traditional folk music.
Yap Chin-Fang
Ms. Yap Chin-Fang is a Teaching Fellow at the Learning Sciences and Assessment (LSA) Academic Group at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NIE NTU, Singapore). She teaches pre-service and in-service courses on pedagogical practices, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) integration and classroom management. Prior to joining NIE NTU, Singapore, she has served as Head of Department (Economics) at a junior college, and as Senior Curriculum Resource Development Officer with the Humanities Branch, Curriculum Planning and Development Division (CPDD), MOE. She was overall-in-charge of Student Learning Space (SLS) for Economics to oversee lesson and resource production and has also co-led the blended learning networked learning community for JC teachers to infuse blended learning and e-pedagogies in the classroom. She has shared at various conferences locally and internationally on innovative ICT-based pedagogical practices. She has co-authored various publications on behavioural economics and macroeconomic development. She is currently pursuing a PhD at Nanyang Technological University, focusing on emerging technologies and teacher professional learning. Her research interests include augmented reality, artificial intelligence, student motivation and teacher professional development.
Alumna: Lau Sin Yee
Ms. Lau Sin Yee’s research interests include how games and technologies such as augmented reality(AR) can supplement learners’ learning motivations and outcomes. She is interested in how learners and educators learn and interact with AR, as well as the affordances and constraints of using such games or technologies.
